Oklahoma beats Texas A&M, SMU and Texas Tech for 4-star DL Logan Lokey

Brent Venables and the Oklahoma Sooners aren't having a great season. They're 4-4 and coming off a 42-25 loss to the South Carolina Gamecocks.

This is a team that was supposed to be a College Football Playoff contender. At this juncture, the Sooners may not even hit bowl eligibility, and Venables, in his fifth season in Norman, may not even last the rest of the season.

That makes the Sooners' recent recruiting win intriguing. The timing of it could not be better for Venables and his staff, because they really need a win right now.

That win came in the form of a commitment from 4-star defensive lineman Logan Lokey from Denton, Texas.

Lokey committed to Oklahoma over the SMU Mustangs, Texas Tech Red Raiders and Texas A&M Aggies. He told Rivals that his fit with the Sooners gave them the edge. That, and he's excited to play for Venables and defensive ends coach Miguel Chavis.

“What sealed the deal for me was fit and God giving me a sense of belonging with the coaching staff and players…that’s when I knew the time was right,” Lokey told Rivals regarding his decision. “As a defensive end, playing under such a great and touted coach like Coach Chavis is such an amazing opportunity, along with playing under an amazing defensive-minded head coach…It all felt like the perfect fit for me.”

Can Oklahoma hold onto Logan Lokey's commitment?

That's also what makes Lokey's commitment intriguing. He likes Oklahoma because of Chavis and Venables, but what if neither coach is in Norman next season?

One has to imagine that could play a role in whether or not Lokey actually remains committed as a 2028 recruit but for now, those relationships are huge advantages for the Sooners.

It's worth noting that Oklahoma also has a strong history recruiting Lokey's high school, Denton Guyer High.

Lokey is ranked as the No. 29 defensive lineman in the class of 2028, according to the 247Sports Composite.
