Brian Kelly interested in Florida State job, but would he be a good hire for Seminoles?

Despite a lack of success in recent years, Florida State remains one of the most recognizable brands in college football.

The firing of Mike Norvell on Sunday signaled that the administration is ready to turn the page and begin to attempt to get back to the winning ways of the past. One name that has been mentioned to take over as head coach and begin that journey is former Notre Dame and LSU head coach Brian Kelly.

Kelly spoke Tuesday about the Florida State opening and revealed his thoughts and interest in the opening.

With his coaching history at other historic programs, Kelly certainly understands what makes the Seminoles such an attractive opening. He spoke about that, as well as his interest in the job on Tuesday.

"I’ve got a great history with Florida State, great games. I know what that’s like, the history and tradition of Florida State, playing in that state, and the fan base," Kelly said. "So anytime you have an incredibly brand driven, great tradition and history, there’s a want and desire to be part of somebody that has had that success and, certainly, leading that program, from anyone’s perspective, would be an honor and privilege."

Would Brian Kelly be a smart hire?

The last time Kelly was a head coach was in 2023, when he was fired by LSU eight games into a 5-3 season. He finished his overall tenure there 34-14, giving him a .708 winning percentage.

His overall career winning percentage of .725 (200-76) makes him an intriguing candidate, but coaching in today's college football landscape boils down to how well coaches can handle the transfer portal and NIL responsibilities.

Kelly's departure from LSU fell right at the same time as the college football landscape shifting, meaning he did not have a ton of time to showcase his ability to retain key players and bring in star players from other programs.

Hiring someone who hasn't done that yet would be a massive risk for Florida State to take. It may be smart for Kelly to be considered, but eventually not chosen as the Seminoles should look for someone who has proved that they can both retain and bring in big-time talent.
