Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid has scored assists in 16 consecutive games and can be officially crowned the "apple king" in the NHL this season.

McDavid has caught fire as his assist streak has been the longest active in NHL history. While Edmonton fell short to the New Jersey Devils in a 4-3 defeat on Tuesday, McDavid racked up his 31st assist of the season.

The 29-year-old reached the noteworthy 30-assist mark on Nov. 1 in the team's 4-1 victory over the New York Rangers. McDavid also became the quickest player in NHL history to record 30 assists in a season, reaching the milestone in 15 games.

It was a noteworthy milestone as he also broke Wayne Gretzky's 42-year-old record of reaching 30 assists across 16 games in 1984-85.
