Shortly after it was learned that Baltimore Ravens starting quarterback Lamar Jackson could miss the rest of this season due to the injury to the thumb on his throwing hand that he suffered this past Sunday, a report mentioned that the Ravens could look to acquire journeyman Jacoby Brissett from the Arizona Cardinals.
It sounds like the Ravens losing primary backup Tyler Huntley to a season-ending toe injury forced them into making a move as soon as possible.
On Wednesday afternoon, ESPN's Adam Schefter and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport revealed that the Ravens "are finalizing" a trade with the Cardinals for Brissett.
Undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano will start at quarterback for the 4-4 Ravens when they host the 5-2 Jacksonville Jaguars this Thursday night. Shortly after the Brissett news broke, DraftKings Sportsbook had the Ravens as 10-point home underdogs against the Jaguars.
"The trade will not be finalized in time for Jacoby Brissett to play Thursday night vs. Jacksonville," Schefter added. "But once it is, he will be expected to make his debut in Week 10 on 'Monday Night Football' versus the winless Los Angeles Chargers."
The 0-7 Chargers are hosting the 2-5 Houston Texans this coming Sunday. Meanwhile, it was unknown as of Wednesday afternoon what the Ravens would be sending the Cardinals for Brissett.
As of early Wednesday afternoon, it was believed that the Ravens could look to land either Chicago Bears backup Tyson Bagent or current Indianapolis Colts starter Daniel Jones instead of Brissett. However, Schefter noted that Ravens quarterbacks coach Israel Woolfork previously held that role with the Cardinals and worked with Brissett. The two also worked together during the 2022 season while with the Cleveland Browns.
Brissett was benched in favor of backup Gardner Minshew II during Arizona's matchup against the Dallas Cowboys this past Sunday. After Minshew helped the Cardinals earn a 33-30 overtime win over the Cowboys, Arizona relegated Brissett to QB3 duties.
Wednesday's developments indicate the Ravens aren't fully punting on the season ahead of the Nov. 10 NFL trade deadline, but it also seems like Baltimore won't be a big buyer before the sun sets next Tuesday.
Brissett is happy medium. Expected low cost to get him. Not absorbing much salary. But at least should give team a chance to play competent offensive football. Ravens clearly feel it's important for young WRs to continue to develop/young coaching staff to have chance to win https://t.co/5B94K7q2NZ
