Connor Hellebuyck gives vague explanation for trade request away from Jets

From the moment the Winnipeg Jets 2025-26 season came to an end, Connor Hellebuyck, their former All-Star goalie, made it very clear he was unhappy with the direction of the franchise. That frustration eventually resulted in him requesting a trade, not reporting to training camp, getting suspended by the team, and then eventually getting traded to the New Jersey Devils.

On Wednesday, and just one week before he makes his first visit to Winnipeg as an opposing player, he released a statement addressing the fans of Winnipeg and why he wanted a fresh start.

It still does not provide many answers.

Connor Hellebuyck gives vague explanation for trade request

After thanking the fans and describing how much the city and his time there meant to him, he talked about certain considerations with his family being the driving force behind the need for a change. He did not go into any details regarding those considerations and said he wanted to keep them private.

It is certainly his right to keep that private, and without fully knowing the details, it's hard to make much of a judgement on that.

What we can do is look at the facts that preceded his trade out of Winnipeg.

That is not speculation. Those are simply facts. They are also the only facts fans in Winnipeg are going to care about it, and it is almost certainly going to lead to one of the most hostile reactions of any former player returning this season.

We have already seen how these trade requests have gone over, with Larkin being vilified in Detroit, Brady Tkachuk getting absolutely roasted in his return by Ottawa Senators fans and Vancouver Canucks fans doing the same to defenseman Quinn Hughes.

Winnipeg fans have always been one of the more relentless crowds in the league, and they are not going to make it a fun environment for Hellebuyck on Tuesday, Nov. 10 when the Devils make their visit.
