The Ohio State Buckeyes still don't seem to expect starting quarterback Julian Sayin back anytime soon.
With that said, head coach Ryan Day recently revealed that the prognosis for Sayin as he tries to recover from what ultimately ended up being a fractured right elbow is positive.
Again, don't expect Sayin to strap on his helmet and begin an active "back onto the field" rehab in the next few weeks. It does sound like there were some rather serious conversations had, though, and the overall outlook for the quarterback is better than what it could have been.
“All things considered, the outcome with different options that we were kind of going into the situation thinking it could be, I think this has been a decent outcome for us and for him,” Day said during his radio show on Thursday (h/t Eleven Warriors). “And so we'll let him kind of go through that. But this thing looks to be healing. It's not gonna be next week or next month; it's gonna take some time, but I think certainly for the long term, we feel like we're on a good track here.”
Sayin was injured in Ohio State's Oct. 17 loss to the Indiana Hoosiers and had to watch the rest of the game from the sideline with his arm in a sling.
He then underwent surgery on the elbow, and it was reportedly bad enough that the procedure involved inserting plates and screws to try to fix the damage.
The Buckeyes are now rolling with Luke Fahey at quarterback, but Sayin is remaining involved.
“It's been good to have him in the meetings, having Julian around the team,” Day said. “I think it's important for him to be around the guys. And I think it says a lot about him that he's not just off doing his rehab or whatever, he's with the team. And he takes his role very seriously.”
Ohio State is currently 6-2 and ranked No. 12 in the College Football Playoff standings. With games still remaining against No. 23 Oregon, Northwestern, Nebraska and Michigan, it's vital the Buckeyes finish the season with just two losses to remain in CFP contention.
One would imagine that OSU's chances of making the CFP could determine the speed of Sayin's potential comeback.
