It’s not every day that a player reaches a goal-scoring mark faster than the GR8.
During a game against the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night, Utah Mammoth forward Logan Cooley scored a hat trick, the fifth of his young NHL career. The 22-year-old accomplished the feat in just his 228th game, making him the fastest active player to register five three-goal performances.
With his hat trick tonight, Logan Cooley (228 GP) became the fastest active player to record five career hat tricks, besting Alex Ovechkin (230 GP).

Cooley even beat the great Alex Ovechkin, as he potted his fifth hat trick two games faster than the Washington Capitals captain.
Cooley found the back of the net twice before the halfway mark of the first period in the Bell Centre, giving the Mammoth an early lead. After the Canadiens came back to tie the game, the former Minnesota Golden Gopher put Utah back out in front once again just past the halfway mark of the middle frame.

It was Cooley’s second hat trick in four games, as he notched a trio of goals in an overtime win against the Pittsburgh Penguins last Thursday. He added an assist in Montreal to give him a four-point night. Unfortunately for Cooley, the Canadiens got the last laugh, as Cole Caufield capped off a late comeback for the home team, scoring in overtime to give Montreal a 5-4 win.
The Pittsburgh native scored his first hat trick back in his rookie season in 2023-24, when the franchise was known as the Arizona Coyotes. After not putting together a hat trick in his sophomore campaign, Cooley posted two three-goal nights last season.
With his impressive outing against the Habs, Cooley now has 11 goals in the 2026-27 season, tying Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews for fifth in the NHL in goals. Cooley also moved into second in team scoring, with 21 points in 17 games, one point back of Clayton Keller for the lead on the Mammoth roster.
