Basketball purists should probably steer clear of Friday’s NBA Cup game between the Philadelphia 76ers and Cleveland Cavaliers.
The Cavs led the Sixers 49-41 midway through the second quarter at Rocket Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. The 30-second stretch of basketball from 5:52 to 5:22 won’t be added to any highlight reels anytime soon.
The sequence started with James Harden throwing a horrendous entry pass that was easily picked off by VJ Edgecombe. The 76ers youngster then ran a two-man break with LeBron James, who had his own pass stolen by Sam Merrill.

On the other end, Cavs swingman Peyton Watson recovered from a near-turnover to find Thomas Bryant for an uncontested dunk that rattled around the rim and out. James got a second chance off Bryant’s miss and badly botched a layup.
The sequence of poor play mercifully ended with Harden getting stripped, leading to a wide-open Edgecombe dunk that actually went through the hoop like it was supposed to.
The Cavaliers recovered from having the Monstars temporarily steal their basketball abilities to beat the 76ers 119-95. The result snapped the Sixers’ five-game winning streak.
