Saturday night, Feb. 3, was electric at Dickies Arena to wrap up the 2024 Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo (FWSSR). The eight contestants in each event earned their way into the finals for a chance to compete for the $20,000 top prize.

Bareback Riding

Kicking it off, literally, Rocker Steiner's first draw horse lost his flank strap and allowed the Weatherford, Texas, phenom a second chance. Steiner took the time to gather his breath and sit down on Straight Stick from the J Bar J Rodeo Company. He nodded his head, and eight seconds later, the two-time National Finals Rodeo (NFR) qualifier scored 92.5 points to win his second consecutive FWSSR title.

An amped-up Steiner said, "If it takes me working twice as hard to win this rodeo, I'll do it every time."

In total, Steiner collected $28,000 for his rides in Fort Worth. Worthy of note, every time the cowboy decked out in red nodded his head, he was a champion.

Steer Wrestling

The top of the leaderboard was like seeing double in the steer wrestling. Dalton Massey from Hermiston, Ore., was the first man to get back in the box and set the pace. He did just that with his 3.7-second run. Kansas' own Tanner Brunner said, "Not so fast," when he threw his steer at the exact same time.

The pair of cowboys will split $32,000, which will certainly help the world standings race. Before the finals, Massey sat in the seventh position while Brunner found himself at No. 12. Both cowboys will make a significant move and take some pressure off in the coming winter rodeos.

Breakaway Roping

"Dynamite Danielle" Lowman showed up yet again in the finals. The Turquoise Circuit stand-out makes the breakaway look easy, and those who do it know differently. Backing in the box, nodding, chasing the calf down, and roping it slick around the neck in under two seconds is a feat few ropers ever achieve. Lowman does it on the daily.

In her first two go-round performances, Lowman was 3.4 seconds on two — close to what most ropers do on one head. Lowman was early in the draw and just did what she does best. When the flag dropped, the timers stopped at 1.8 seconds.

"I am just thankful to be here. I am very blessed that I was able to accomplish this in Texas. Tipping my hat to my dad and my grandma as they push me to be who I am. I am super excited and grateful to be here," Lowman said.

Saddle Bronc Riding

Seven of the eight cowboys in the classic saddle bronc riding event were NFR qualifiers, and within the group were six world titles. Those credentials set an expectation of the caliber and the cowboys provided.

Damian Brennan aboard All or Nothin' from Andrews Rodeo got it all and gave up nothin'. The sorrel saddle bronc horse is known for putting head to chest and kicking hard. Sammy Andrews had to be proud of the trip the stellar horse had in the finals.

Coming from Australia, Brennan was in time and spurred every jump, earning every single point of 91 to win $20,000, a new pair of R. Watson boots, and a bottle of TX Whiskey.

"I just tried to keep it simple and get a good spur out and then go fast. I'm very happy. It's been a long time and a lot of work to be here riding against these guys. To get the win, means the world," Brennan said.

Tie Down Roping

Money, money, money! It's Shad "Money" Mayfield for the win. Coming into the finals, Mayfield was leading the world standings by $22,000. Add in the $20,000 from his win at Fort Worth, and he will have already banked more than $63,000 for the season.

Roping second in the line-up was no pressure for Mayfield. He and his bay horse, whom he calls Lollipop, went through the motions in 7.8 seconds to stand above the crowd. With six more of the best in the world to rope, Mayfield watched intently, but none rose to the occasion.

"I've got to give credit to my horse. He makes everything easy for me. I've got a lot of goals this year. This is one of my favorite rodeos, and winning this is pretty special. Two weeks ago, the doctors told me I need surgery on both of my hips. After this win, I decided I am going to tough it out and go all year because I want another gold buckle, and this is my year," Mayfield said.

Team Roping

Saving the best for last, the team ropers from Broken Bow, Okla., and Stephenville, Texas, took the win. Clay Smith and his partner Coleby Payne picked up checks for $20,000 each for being just one-tenth faster than the first team out.

While Brenten Hall and Kaden Michael Profili held the lead the entire roping with a 4.6, Smith and Payne looked up at the clock to see a 4.5, which was good enough for the win.

"When we have to be pretty aggressive, I feel like, is when we rope our best. I knew we had a good steer and could be fast," Payne said.

After winning Fort Worth for the second time, Smith said, "I want to thank my savior, first of all, for letting all this be possible. My family is here, and this is an awesome win and a good start to the year."

Barrel Racing

After the last team to go took the win in the team roping, the very first barrel racer down the alleyway stole the show and earned her big payday.

Sara Winkelman from Big Lake, Minn., ran the fastest time of the entire rodeo in the second semifinal set with her 16.26. Winkelman advanced out of bracket number two, winning $3,000 for her efforts on her first two runs. Add that to her $4,000 win in the semifinals and the $20,000 from the finals, and Winkelman will find herself catapulted into the top five of the World Standings.

Winkelman came through the alleyway aboard her trusty horse, Fairway ta Fame, whom she affectionately calls Rory. After turning three pretty barrels, she crossed the electric eyes in 16.40 seconds and held on for the entire race to earn the win.

"This just shows how much heart Rory has; he is truly amazing," Winkelman said with a twinkle in her eye. When asked whether winning Fort Worth was a big deal, she smiled and said, "We all know it's a big deal to win this rodeo."

Bull Riding

Only two of the eight scheduled riders covered their bulls for eight seconds. Rafter G Rodeo had five bulls in the finals, and their own Goin Brandon was the champion, with Cody Teel scoring 87 championship points.

The solid black bull came out with two big, powerful jumps followed by a spin to the right and then throwing a change up to turn back left, and Teel never missed a beat.

"This was a tough set of bulls all week. As a bull rider, when you draw one you like, you have to take advantage of it. I was happy to do that today. Getting that buckle is really special," Teel said.
