Rodney Mullen recently took to Instagram and shared a heartfelt reflection on how he became part of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 —a moment that happened basically by accident.

It was 1999 and Rodney was recovering from a busted ankle when he met Tony Hawk for lunch. Just two friends catching up. But by the end of the conversation, Hawk had invited Rodney to join the game’s official roster, offering what Mullen now calls “a bigger gift than I could’ve ever asked for.” So rad. Check the full message below.

Here's what Rodney had to say:

"Tony first asked me to be in his game (THPS II) in what seemed an afterthought after meeting for lunch when I busted my ankle ~1999. All I needed was advice from a Friend, yet he left me with a bigger gift than I could’ve ever asked for. At first, the Honor of Tony bringing me into that crazy circle of skaters was the coolest part, yet over time, it’s the friendships that’ve meant the most, including those with Lisa Hudson, Joel, Ralph plus the wizards who made the game so special. Now, after 25 years, Activision remastered THPS 3+4, adding new levels, music, and more. Check it out if you get the time. Most of all: Thank you Tony for all you’ve done and do for us!"

Here we are 25ish years later and as many of you know, Activision has remastered THPS 3+4, adding new levels, music, and other updates to the legendary skateboarding video game. In the post, Mullen encouraged fans to check it out, while taking a moment to publicly thank The Birdman for everything he’s done—and continues to do—for the skateboarding community.

Legends, these two. Absolute legends.

The Tony Hawk's Pro Skater franchise changed the lives of countless skateboarders, and it's always humbling to hear the stories. What started as a casual lunch turned into a defining moment in both their lives—a solid reminder that the greatest gifts often come when you least expect them.
