Nora Vasconcellos is one-hundred percent one of my favorite skateboarders. No debate. Her journey from a little grom in Pembroke, Massachusetts, to the heart of the skateboarding world (in Southern California no less) is a story of resilience, passion, and of course, raw talent.
Vice recently caught up with Nora to give her the 'Let it Kill You' treatment and it's a great episode, to say the least. If you were already a Nora fan, well, this is going to amplify that feeling. Dive in:
I remember seeing little glimpses of Nora back in 2012-2013 and knew that she was going to be one of the pioneers who really helped break the mold for a lot of women and girls in skateboarding. And as much as I hate labeling it that way, rewind ten years ago and it's hard to argue that it certainly wasn't how it is today.
When she got on Welcome, I feel like everything changed. But it was her move to adidas that really put the spotlight on her. Since then, well, the world has been hers! On and off the board, she's a force to be reckoned with. She's talented, sure, but she has one of those priceless personalities that you can't help but admire.
She has successfully pushed past all the outdated norms that skateboarding is unfortunately polluted with and carved out her own lane. In fact, speaking of adidas, she literally made history as the first female skateboarder to ever be signed by the Three Stripes squad and even has her name on a shoe! That's major.
I think she brings a refreshing energy to skateboarding—her personality, her drive, and her authenticity make her more than just a "pro skater"—she’s a trailblazer, in its truest form, and a reminder that as long as you're passionate about something, you can really make it happen. Love to see it.
Anyways, her story is one worth watching. Keep crushing, Nora! We see you.
