Aleksander Kilde won’t compete in the World Cup this winter after experiencing complications during his injury recovery process.
Kilde, a Norwegian alpine racer, two-time Olympic medalist, and fiancee to Mikaela Shiffrin, crashed in Switzerland about nine months ago, injuring his shoulder and leg.
In an Instagram post, he explained that his shoulder would require another surgery, preventing him from returning to the race course as soon as he hoped.
The trouble began over the summer when, at the end of July, Kilde began feeling tired. His shoulder also didn’t feel right.
Kilde found out that his shoulder was infected, so he underwent surgery and started taking antibiotics, which, at first, worked. But the infection eventually returned, prompting the upcoming surgery.
Comments from fellow athletes poured in below Kilde’s Instagram update.
“Let's go champ!! Stay the course!” wrote American alpine racer River Radamus.
“One more surgery, keep fighting! You’ll be back,” added three-time Olympic medalist Lindsey Vonn.
The AP reports that, according to the Norwegian ski team doctor, Trond Floberghagen, Kilde will be ready to compete in the 2025-2026 World Cup.
“I’m fully committed to my rehab and working towards a strong comeback. Thanks for all your support during this time,” Kilde said.
Kilde and Shiffrin broke the news of their engagement last April. They’ve been together for over three years after meeting at a ski camp. Like Kilde, Shiffrin has dealt with recent injuries. Last winter, she skipped several races after spraining the MCL and tibiofibular ligament in her knee.
As the World Cup season approaches, Shiffrin has decided to forego downhill events and instead focus on her specialties—giant slalom and slalom—where she’s won the bulk of her medals. After becoming the winningest alpine racer of all time, her present goal is to hit the lofty 100-medal watermark.
The World Cup kicks off later this week in Soelden, Austria, with men’s and women’s giant slalom events.
While Kilde’s presence will be sorely missed on this year’s circuit, Shiffrin is gearing up to do what she does best: win. The World Cup concludes in Sun Valley, Idaho, where Shiffrin will look to finish strong on home turf.
