Old Man Winter has paid a visit to Pikes Peak, near Colorado Springs.

The peak, which stands at 14,108 ft., is one of Colorado's most famous 14,000+ foot mountains and is known for being the highest peak on the Front Range of Colorado's Rocky Mountains.

In the 1850's, when gold mining was experiencing one of it's first great booms near present-day Denver, the phrase 'Pikes Peak or Bust' became the slogan of the Colorado Gold Rush, despite the fact that there wasn't actually much gold near the peak itself.

While there many not have been much gold back then, this first dusting of snow is certainly gold, of a kind, at least to skiers. By the looks of the Pikes Peak webcams, it doesn't look like the mountain received more than a couple inches, but even that much is fairly significant for Colorado's Front Range this early in the season. Check it out below.

Highs are supposed to hover right around freezing through the rest of Friday, September 5 before more snow is forecasted to come in Friday night.

Temperatures could warm into the high 30s and snow is slated to turn to rain Saturday afternoon before potentially back to snow Saturday night. By Sunday, rain will have taken over and temperatures will warm into the 40s starting next week.

Pikes Peak and Colorado Springs are closest to Breckenridge, which doesn't seem to have gotten any snow just yet. Breckenridge does have one of the earliest opening dates out of Colorado's resorts and is currently planning to start spinning lifts for the season on November 7, 2025, conditions permitting.

While a dusting of snow on Pikes certainly doesn't mean it's quite time to break out the down jackets and ski boots just yet, it is pretty exciting to see things cool down at high elevations in the Rockies. Knowing Colorado, it could be 70 and sunny by tomorrow, but we don't blame Colorado skiers for getting excited for the upcoming season already.
