Are Moguls Fun? What Almost 3,000 Skiers Really Think
Photo: Karl Weatherly/ Getty Images

It’s Sunday, and you know what that means—we’re back with the results of another POWDER Weekly Poll!

Let’s talk about moguls. They’re feared. They’re adored. They’re seen as a ski skill litmus test. As far as ski conditions go, they might be the most divisive, unlike the unanimously loved stars, including fresh powder and perfect corn snow.

How varied are skiers’ opinions on moguls, though? We endeavored to find out, with some help from the hardworking scientists at the POWDERDepartment of Polls and Skier Opinion.

Keep reading to see what skiers had to say when asked: Do you enjoy skiing moguls?

Here’s what 2,974 skiers had to say.

POWDER Weekly Poll Results

Poll Highlights

  • Total Votes: 2,974
  • Most Popular Choice: Yes (1,528 votes, 51% of voters)
  • Least Popular Choice: I used to, but now my knees hurt (126 votes, 4% of voters)
  • Other results:
No: 549 votes, 18% of voters Sometimes, if conditions are good: 771 votes, 26% of voters

Poll Observations

  • Contentious might not be the right word (we're talking about snow formations, after all), but this poll was, by no means, a slam dunk. People who answered “no” or “sometimes” accounted for nearly half of all the votes. That makes sense given the wide-ranging opinions people have about moguls.
  • The scientists at the POWDERDepartment of Polls and Skier Opinion anticipated that more people would fall into the “sometimes, if conditions are good” camp. Can anyone really say they enjoy skiing icy, bulletproof moguls? The poll results suggest that this might be the case, given the options presented, but we aren’t sure if we believe it.
  • One comment on Instagram spoke to us deeply: “Moguls are physical manifestations of fear!” We couldn’t agree more, especially during an ill-advised straight line.
  • Several commenters nodded to soft, slushy moguls, too, which, in our humble opinions, are some of the best conditions you can find on the mountain. Bouncing around is fun, as long as your quads can keep up.
  • Glen Plake’s name also came up more than a few times. The freestyle legend is a mogul maestro. Here he is, among others, executing some beautiful zipper lines.

What We Could’ve Done Better

  • This was another poll that went off smoothly. Still, there was room to hone in on the wording of our options. On the note of the “sometimes” category not seeing too many votes—if our poll included “yes, no matter the conditions” instead of just “yes,” maybe we would’ve seen a broader range of answers.

About the POWDER Weekly Poll

We launch our weekly polls at 3 p.m. Eastern Time every Monday. They remain open until 12:00 p.m. Eastern Time the following Friday, with the results dropping on Sunday at 9 a.m. Eastern Time. You can participate and see the results right here on our website or by visiting our Instagram page.

While you’re at it, drop us a line or leave an Instagram comment if there’s a poll you’d like to see next. Skiers have plenty of opinions and preferences, and we want to know which ones might land on top of the heap.
