Spring is quickly turning to summer in the Northern Hemisphere, which means fall is turning to winter just as fast down south. Some locations in Australia are seeing their first snowflakes of the year, and ski areas are getting ready for opening day.
Generally, the ski season in Australia runs from early to mid June until late September or early October, depending on conditions. There are a handful of major resorts in the country, scattered across New South Wales and Victoria, including Perisher, the largest ski area in the Southern Hemisphere.
Victoria's Mt. Buller saw a pretty good dusting over the last few days, and right in time with just under a month until they open for the season. Mt. Hotham has also seen fairly significant snowfall since March. Although it hasn't all stuck around, recent cold temperatures and more snow have things shaping up well in Victoria. With just a few weeks until lifts start spinning, do your snow dances, Southern Hemisphere folks!
Here's when Australia's ski areas plan to open for the 2026 season (hint: mark your calendar for June 6!).
