The Freeride World Tour is planning to host its final event—the Yeti Xtreme Verbier—this Friday should weather conditions cooperate.
"After today's call with our meteorologist, Friday still appears to be the best option, with only very low winds and a thin cloud layer forecasted," the FWT wrote in an Instagram update shared yesterday afternoon.
Beyond Friday, the FWT's forecaster anticipates heavy snow will blow into Verbier, Switzerland. On Monday, the weather should clear, but the FWT is concerned that the planned venue might be unsafe after the stormy conditions, presumably due to avalanche risk.
While holding out for the fresh snow might sound like the best call, the FWT's already learned a tough lesson while tangling with the competition face: the imposing Bec des Rosses.
Last winter, event organizers decided that the venue was suitable for competition after a similar late-season storm, thanks to unstable snow conditions. The FWT ultimately canceled the competition to avoid risking the athletes' safety.
This season, though, the FWT appears to be treating the Bec des Rosses with extra caution, meaning we should be in for an incredible show this week as the women and men duel for the overall titles in their respective fields.
Stay tuned for additional updates.
