Jay Peak, Vermont, has surpassed 400 inches of snowfall on the season.
That puts the East Coast ski resort in a league alongside Western destinations known for their powder snow, like Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, Grand Targhee, and Alta Ski Area.
In fact, with 406 inches of snow this season so far, as of today, March 11, 2025, Jay Peak is outpacing all of those resorts in winter snowfall, per the snow reports published by each ski area.
If any Eastern ski resort can compete with the destinations out West, it’s probably Jay Peak. The resort is often considered the snowiest out East and, according to local legend, benefits from a stormy microclimate called the “Jay Cloud.”

While the factuality of the mythical microclimate has been examined, poked, and prodded, this much is true—Jay Peak gets a lot of snow, and its current snowfall total exemplifies that rule.
For Jay Peak, it’s shaping up to be a memorable season. This winter’s snowfall total is well beyond the ski area’s average of 347 inches.
Today is forecasted to be warm at the ski area, and no significant storms are forecasted in the long term, but it’s only the beginning of March. Another series of storms could arrive and push Jay Peak’s base further ahead.
The resort isn’t the only East Coast destination to benefit from a snowy winter. On Mount Mansfield, Vermont—which towers above Stowe Mountain Resort—the current snow depth is well above average, sitting at 94 inches as of the latest measurement. The stake eclipses 100 inches of snowpack earlier this month. Stowe, meanwhile, stands just below its seasonal average, with 296 inches of snow this season so far. During an average winter, it picks up 314 inches of the white stuff.
Meanwhile, at several Western ski resorts, a storm is brewing. Powderchasers, our snow forecasters, are calling for heavy snowfall this week, particularly in Sierra Nevada. Destinations like Mammoth Mountain and Palisades Tahoe could receive well over a foot, with massive snowfall totals possible Wednesday night. Several other states, including Washington, Oregon, Wyoming, Colorado, and Idaho, are expected to get in on the widespread action, too.
The start of spring may only be a few days away, but we advise against putting away your powder skis—someone coined the phrase “miracle March” for a reason.
