There's a joke amongst skiers who live in the Sierra. Like Fall? Too bad. We jump straight from summer to winter around these parts.

The transition to full-blown snowpack and icy temperatures doesn't always happen so harshly, but for Mammoth Mountain, California, October of 2025 will be remembered for how quickly Father Winter spread his chill.

POWDER has just received word that 6-10 inches of snow has accumulated at Mammoth today, October 14, 2025, and more is on the way. Our friends at Powderchasers are predicting that up to 24 inches (two feet) of total snow could fall by the time the storm is over on Thursday, October 16, 2025.

We can't wait to see what the mountain looks like tomorrow, but for now, check out this awesome B-Roll footage of the storm courtesy of our friends at Mammoth. Are we sure this video was recorded in October?!

I know what you're wondering—if it snows two feet, will Mammoth be able to open early? There's a chance that the mountain could spin lifts before its planned opening day on November 14, 2025, but we'll have to wait for an official announcement.

Professional skier and Mammoth grooming manager Bernie Rosow, however, put the nail in the coffin of skiers hoping for an opening as soon as this week. Rosow wrote on his Instagram story on October 14, "A foot of snow is not gonna open the mountain. Lotta people asking right now. Don't hold your breath, but they will open the mountain early if they can. Gonna take a lot more than this though."

Regardless if the mountain opens early, this is a great start to Mammoth's early-season. Don't be surprised if snow guns and snow cats begin to work on the Broadway runs and terrain in the coming days.

October storms are exciting. Keep the hype going with this gallery courtesy Mammoth Mountain and Visit Mammoth Lakes. Enjoy!
