Mikaela Shiffrin ends 30-race streak by skiing out in first run

U.S. alpine skiing star Mikaela Shiffrin entered her first run at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics on Monday morning looking to secure a gold medal in her third consecutive games. She didn't get off to the start she was looking for and instead, did something she hadn't done in more than four years.

The defending Olympic champion in the women's giant slalom skied out early in her first run and in the process, failed to finish a run in the event for the first time since Jan. 23, 2018, a 30-race streak according to NBC.

"Shiffrin, 26, was the seventh skier down the hill on the first of what could have been two runs," per The Athletic. "A victory in the event would have made her the winningest American Alpine skier ever at the Olympics with her third gold medal and fourth overall."

Monday's women's giant slalom was the first of a potential five events for Shiffrin during the 2022 Olympics.

The games are scheduled to run to Feb. 20.
