Mammoth Mountain, California, has confirmed that a skier died on Thursday, February 5, 2026.
Mammoth Ski Patrol received a call at 1:00 p.m. local time that a skier had suffered a severe fall in 'Dropout Chute 2', a Double-Black Diamond, ungroomed slope accessed from the resort's popular Chair 23.
Life-saving care was administered, and the victim was transported to a local hospital. The skier later passed away from their injuries.
Eye-witnesses reported on Reddit that the accident was the "worst" they had ever seen. The skier allegedly lost their ski and slid head-first into a rock.
The incident marks the third death of the season at Mammoth. Ski Patroller Cole Murphy also tragically passed away in an avalanche in December.
Our thoughts and condolences are with the friends and family of the deceased.
