It’s hot. If you live in Salt Lake City—or any other part of Utah, really—you’ve been treated to a toasty week that brought temperatures more reminiscent of June than March.

For those in the snow business, this, of course, isn’t great news. Less powder than usual has piled up in Utah this season. Now, the slopes are baking.

That’s prompted some Utah resorts to close early. Cherry Peak, Eagle Point, and Nordic Valley have all thrown in the towel. Snowbasin’s season ends this weekend, on Sunday, March 22.

Still, other mountains plan to keep pushing ahead.

In Little Cottonwood Canyon, Snowbird’s base depth is above 80 inches, and, earlier this week, a representative for the resort told The Salt Lake Tribune that closing day remains May 25 and “There has not been talk of closing early yet. I’m hopeful for a cold and snowy April!”

As if to hammer the point home, Snowbird shared photos of its current, widespread snow coverage on Friday, writing in a social media post, “Spring laps are firing at the Bird.” Snowbird’s neighbor, Alta, is hanging on to solid snow coverage, too, per its webcams

“Personally, I think the Cottonwoods should be able to hold up to the heat with their current snowpack and higher elevations,” Evan Thayer, a forecaster for OpenSnow, wrote in a recent blog post. “But low elevation locations will struggle to make it to the end of the month.”

He added that the nearest chance of precipitation comes at the end of March, potentially bringing more normal temperatures with it.

For now, though, the waiting game persists.

This is when Utah’s ski resorts plan to close in 2026. Keep in mind: these closing dates are subject to change, so check your chosen resort’s website before planning a trip. Another tip: pack some sunscreen.
