Vail Resorts has filed notice to close an operating unit in Broomfield, Colorado, and lay off 64 employees as part of its previously announced “Resource Efficiency Transformation Plan."

The impacted roles were detailed in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) notice submitted by Vail Resorts Wednesday, and include positions like “Coordinator: HR Shared Services,” and “Specialist: HR Generalist.”

The first layoffs are expected to begin June 2 and the operating unit will likely be closed permanently, according to the WARN notice.

The pending layoffs weren’t unexpected. They were addressed in September 2024, when Vail Resorts shared plans to trim less than 2% of its total workforce as one measure associated with the “Resource Efficiency Transformation Plan.”

The September news release detailing the strategy said that the eliminations would include 14% of Vail Resorts’ corporate workforce and less than 1% of its operations workforce, with 0.2% impact on frontline roles.

"No matter how big or small the impact of position eliminations, we do not take lightly any decision that affects our team members," Kirsten Lynch, Vail Resorts’ CEO, said in the news release. "Our team members are the core of our mission to create an Experience of a Lifetime, and we have tremendous gratitude for their passion and commitment to our mission, our mountains, and our guests."

With the “Resource Efficiency Transformation Plan,” Vail Resorts is targeting $100 million in savings by the end of fiscal year 2026. Lynch, in the news release, called the plan a “natural progression and next step for our company, that builds upon our success and paves the way for the next phase of growth.”

Vail Resorts is one of two major global ski conglomerates most familiar to North American skiers—the other being Alterra Mountain Company—and sells the popular Epic Pass multi-pass product. The company, which is headquartered in Broomfield, has a portfolio of 42 mountain resorts.
