Vermont's Highest Peak Sees First Snow of the Season

What’s that? Snow on Vermont’s Mount Mansfield? Sure is.

Stowe Mountain Resort, near Mount Mansfield, broke the news in an excited social media post, sharing footage captured on the peak, which, at 4,395 feet, is Vermont’s highest.

The webcam video showed flakes flying through the air, but no obvious accumulation. A look at the webcam a few hours later doesn’t appear to show any snow.

Still, the wintry tease was cause for excitement, with the comments section of Stowe Mountain Resort’s post drawing snowflake emojis and a GIF of Steve Carell’s character in  The Office doing what he does best: freaking out.

Yesterday, local news outlet WCAXcorrectly predicted that the arrival of colder temperatures could produce high-altitude snow. The outlet said that the flakes would be “pretty widespread” into Thursday evening and overnight.

However, at Mount Mansfield’s elevation, only a trace of accumulation is expected. Mount Marcy, in New York, is higher and might see between one and two inches.

WCAX also noted that snow in these mountains in October isn’t unusual. This storm falls roughly between the dates when Mount Mansfield saw its earliest and latest first snow. According to Vermont Public, the peak has seen snow as early as September 15 back in 1959. The latest first snow happened on November 20, 1978.

Stowe Mountain Resort hasn’t confirmed its opening date for the 2025-26 season. Last year, the resort opened on December 3. The waiting game, then, will likely persist for a little longer out East.

Meanwhile, in Colorado, the race for first chair appears to be reaching a crescendo. While the regular headliners Keystone and Arapahoe Basin haven’t confirmed an opening date yet, both resorts have shared videos of their snowcats moving snow. “We still do not have an opening date but get those boards and skis ready folks,” Arapahoe Basin wrote in an anticipatory social media post Thursday afternoon.
