Wachusett's "Clueless" Takes on Chairlift Construction Are Gold

Construction is underway at Wachusett Mountain, Massachusetts, on a new six-person chairlift, and the ski resort has spent this summer publishing regular updates about the project on social media.

Some of those updates, however, are a little unusual. First, they were by-the-numbers, starring Wachusett Mountain’s mountain operations manager. He gave detailed information about each step of the chairlift replacement.

Then, the mountain operations manager was apparently busy, so Chris Stimpson, who handles public relations at Wachusett Mountain, stepped in, providing a “clueless” take on the project.

“I don’t know much about construction, but I am wearing a Carhartt t-shirt,” he said in the opening of his first video.

That should give you an idea of where this is going—watch the rest of Stimpson’s video below.

Stimpson’s descriptions of the construction proceedings will be familiar to those of us who’ve never spent time on a job site and, despite our best efforts, don’t really know how building a chairlift works.

One of the Cat construction vehicles, Stimpson notes, looks like Wall-E. He describes another machine as a “giant spaghetti fork twirler.” The excavator moving dirt isn’t helping with the chairlift. Instead, it’s crafting a giant zen garden.

While the mountain operations manager has since stepped back in, Stimpson’s series is continuing, too, covering the tongue-in-cheek angle.

In another video from Wachusett Mountain’s “clueless construction updates” series, we learn that the ski resort obtained some PVC pipes from the Blue Man Group’s weird instruments (that’s a joke in case it wasn’t clear!).

Standing out on social media isn’t easy, but with its “clueless construction updates,” Wachusett Mountain has found a way to make construction—a subject that isn’t always stimulating—actually funny.

The numbers suggest that Wachusett Mountain is onto something. The “clueless” videos each outpace their standard counterparts, earning a few thousand more views.

Silliness aside, Wachusett Mountain plans to open the new, updated Polar Express chairlift this coming ski season. It replaces a four-person chairlift that has served skiers and snowboarders since 1994.
