Don't you love it when when one big ski area helps out a smaller ski area?

That's what Kllington, Vermont had planned for its closing day on May 10, 2025. The Beast of the East typically tres to be among the last resorts on the east coast open every year. In classic New England spring fashion, an enormous amount of rain has made that difficult to accomplish this year.

Two small victories come with this. First of all, lift tickets were just $30 per person. Secondly, all of the proceeds will go toward Whaleback Mountain's efforts to repair its chairlift for the upcoming season. Killington is matching all lift ticket purchases, so a $30 ticket purchase means $60 in the bank account of the small ski area off of Interstate-89 on the Vermont/New Hampshire border.

"Saturday, May 10th looks like it could be the last day of the 2024/25 season, so prepare to get in your final turns," a social media post said. "We plan to donate all proceeds from closing day to Whaleback Mountain for its chairlift project and the resort will match ticket sales."

Whaleback held a benefit concert back on April 19 to try to raise some money for the chairlift repairs. The only chairlift started to make a funny noise back in February, and a gearbox's failure was soon found to be the problem. In order to avoid "catastrophic failure" the mountain operations team shut it down.

A lift replacement will cost between $3-4 million. A rebuilt gearbox will cost $250,000. The team at Whaleback is opting to replace the gearbox.

The team had raised $180,000 as of April 14. Season passes for 2025-2026 are on sale, as the team in Enfield is optimistic that it can repair the lift in time for opening day.
