Professional snowboarder Eliot Dänzer has died in an avalanche in Switzerland.
Dänzer was just 22 years old. He was fresh off of a season on the Freeride World Tour Challenger series, where he finished in third place.
The avalanche on the Eiger was triggered on May 17, 2025. Another person was killed, and five others were flown to the hospital, where they received treatment, according to the British Broadcasting Corporation.
“Authorities are investigating the incident,” Jack Burgess of the BBC wrote. “The north face of the Eiger is famous among mountaineers and has a reputation for being one of the world's most challenging climbs.”
Our thoughts are with the friends and family of Dänzer at this time. Here are some of the kind worlds people around the snowboard world had to say:
"Eliot was part of the great freeride family. A talented, humble and passionate rider, he embodied the values of our community: commitment, friendship, freedom and respect for the mountain.
Our heartfelt thoughts go out to his sweetheart Eva, his family, his loved ones, and all those who were lucky enough to share a trace, a smile or a line with him.
Thank you for all the good times we had with you Eliot. Ride in peace."
“Eliot was more than just an athlete — he was a true inspiration, a passionate rider, and above all, a kind and generous soul with a bright future ahead of him. He embodied everything we stand for: love for the mountains, respect for nature, freedom through riding, and the joy of sharing these values with others.
Today, we mourn the loss of not only a talented ambassador but also a beloved friend and brother in spirit. Our hearts are with his family, loved ones, and everyone who had the chance to ride, laugh, and live alongside him.”
"Heartbroken to hear of the death of this beautiful bloke! So glad I got to spend some amazing days with him this spring. Was incredible to watch him grow the last few years. We lost a super nice, committed and brilliant human being here team!"
