The last Warren Miller film – titled 75 – featured quite a bit of snowboarding star power. Action sports legend Selema Masekela dreamed up the idea for a segment that involved bringing LJ Henriquez and Zeb Powell to Hokkaido, Japan to ride powder. It was Henriquez’s first time riding in the backcountry. He told Ski Magazine that he was doing homework in his bedroom when he got the call to head to Japan.
Powell, Masekela, and Henriquez spent nine days in Niseko, Japan. That’s a long ways from Mountain Creek, New Jersey.
Shaun White, Toby Miller, and JJ Thomas also had an appearance in the film. The trio was supposed to spend a majority of their time lapping the terrain park in Park City, Utah. When a surprise snowstorm hit, the group hit the McConkey lift and pivoted to riding powder.
“We had to, you know, make our own path,” Miller told TheSalt Lake Tribune. “We didn’t take the direct route. We took the fun way.”
