Federico Navarro was hampered by injury throughout his third season with the Chicago Fire, preventing the defensive midfielder from providing consistent, positive production throughout much of 2023.
This past season was the first Major League Soccer campaign where Navarro, 23, failed to contribute a goal or assist despite logging over 1,000 minutes in 16 league appearances (15 starts). When he was on the pitch, Navarro habitually made poor challenges in dangerous areas for opponents. This habit reared its ugly head in the first half of the Fire’s 3-3 draw against Atlanta United in May when Navarro was sent off in the 26th minute after he received his second yellow card.
The Fire brought in competition at the defensive midfielder spot when they signed Ousmane Doumbia on loan in June for the remainder of the season. Chicago didn't exercise its purchase option on Doumbia’s contract after the season, so the former Talleres man has a clear line to consistent playing time in 2024.
The expectation for Navarro going forward has to include staying on the pitch by avoiding unnecessary fouls early in contests and (he only recorded a single shot on target in ‘23) at least two goals per season. The Argentine was far too timid going forward throughout 2023 and needs to be a threat in the attacking half of the pitch.
