Bryan Mbeumo’s instant impact in a Manchester United shirt makes it evident why INEOS were so persistent in getting a deal over the line this summer

Fans will recall that the club’s pursuit of Mbeumo lasted several weeks during the transfer window, with Brentford rejecting two bids worth £55 million and £62.5 million.

Eventually, United’s third proposal of £65m was deemed suitable by the Bees, and the forward put pen to paper on a five-year deal.

Mbeumo has since started every Premier League fixture for the Red Devils, returning two goals and an assist – and it’s safe to say his most notable contribution came last night.

Inside just two minutes of kick-off at Anfield, Mbeumo had found the back of the net, opening the scoring in front of the Kop to stun the home fans into silence.

His goal would eventually be countered by Cody Gakpo, who levelled the scoring in the 78th minute, until Harry Maguire made sure the three points would be coming back to Manchester when he restored United’s lead in the 84th.

Even aside from Mbeumo’s sensational finish, he proved once again to be one of the most impactful players on the pitch.

He played the full 90 minutes on Merseyside and recorded an 80 per cent passing accuracy. The 26-year-old took 31 touches in total, with three coming inside the box, and registered three crosses and three shots.

StatmanDave adds the Cameroon international ‘set the tone on a historic day’, in which United clinched their first win on their arch-rivals’ turf in nine-and-a-half years.
