It is safe to say that Heung-Min Son is a modern-day legend at Tottenham hotspur. The South Korea international has been through all the ups and downs at N17 following his arrival in 2015. The near misses and the constant heartaches each year clearly made the 32-year-old’s desire to win silverware with the North London club stronger, as they looked to end their 17-year wait for a major trophy.
The moment finally arrived last month when Spurs defied all odds and beat Manchester United in the final to win the Europa League. The historic achievement felt like a crowning moment for Heung-Min Son as he etched his name in the club’s history books. To put the cherry on the cake, the 32-year-old also captained the side to its first trophy since 2008.
The Spurs No.7 has seen it all during his time at Hotspur Way, and to win in front of the fans was worth all the heartaches that Son suffered in recent years. The prolific winger’s legacy at N17 will live on forever as the North London club aims to build on the Europa League success under Thomas Frank.
Tottenham legend Heung-Min Son might not be at Tottenham next season following the Europa League success. The 32-year-old only has a year remaining in his contract and he is linked with a Saudi move . Daniel Levy must make sure that the Lilywhites take the right decision and only cash-in on the winger if a suitable offer comes in.
Even finance expert Dan Plumley believes that Levy will demand a premium fee for the prolific winger. Speaking to Tottenham News, Plumley said,
“Certainly, for one of your premium stars, with what he’s given to Spurs and how good he’s been on the pitch in recent seasons, they’re going to be at least looking at £40million; they’ve probably got their sights set a little bit higher. He’s coming towards the end of his career, rather than the peak, but they are going to want to command a big fee for him.
The other aspect is what he brings you from an added value perspective, into other markets, and we’ve talked about his influence in South Korea and Asia, throughout his time at Spurs.”
The finance expert added,
“If you are going to not just lose the player, but lose that as well, then you’re going to want to squeeze the fee as high as you can. They could even demand £50m. That’s probably based on the way we know Levy operates, but you can see it, can’t you? I don’t know whether he’s got a release clause, but if he has, I could see them asking for £50m as a starting point.”
Dan Plumley believes that Tottenham will demand a fee of around £40m for Heung-Min Son due to his performances in recent seasons, and also because of his influence and added value in Asian markets. The finance expert adds that Spurs will not only lose Son’s footballing ability, but also his market presence in other parts of the world. That will force the club to hike up the asking price. Plumley believes Daniel Levy would accept a fee of around £40m, but sees the club asking for £50m as a string point.
It remains to be seen what the future holds for Heung-Min Son at N17. The South Korea international still has a chance of staying put and kickstarting a new era under Thomas Frank. But, Spurs could a lot of business with the money offered by the Saudi clubs, and it would certainly be tempting to cash-in on the 32-year-old in the summer.
