5 PL Transfers Who Could FLOP Next Season

In fairness, this one could go either way, really. Youri Tielemans wasn’t brought on board at Manchester United to move mountains, nor did they pay an awful lot of money for him (£35 million).

However, we must question where he fits into the system. His work-rate simply isn’t high enough for him to realistically thrive in Michael Carrick’s setup, as he likes his teams to hit their opponents on the break.

Tielemans thrives in possession and struggles off the ball. Paradoxically, at United, he’ll probably be spending a lot of time out of possession, especially against some of the division’s stronger outfits. Still, we’re open to the possibility of being proved wrong in this instance.

Emersonn

Ipswich Town look set for a difficult season in the Premier League this year. Alarm bells rang when now-former head coach Kieran McKenna left the club – for us, however, they reached a crescendo when Emersonn was snapped up to be their marquee summer signing.

Emersonn certainly has potential, being a tall, powerful forward, but Ipswich need someone who is ready to plug and play. With no prior experience in the Premier League and an underwhelming goal record, Emersonn is not that person.

While playing for Toulouse in Ligue 1 last season, the Brazilian scored just six goals over the course of 27 league games. Uninspiring numbers, to say the least.

Alejandro Garnacho

Alejandro Garnacho had such a promising start to life in football at Manchester United, but he has been on a downward trajectory ever since.

His move to Chelsea last season was little more than an unmitigated disaster. Scoring just one goal in 24 Premier League games, the Blues have now opted to jettison him out on loan to Aston Villa.

As far as we can tell, Garnacho is a bit of a diva. He has plenty of ego, but lacks the talent to back it up – as such, we’re not expecting him to set the world alight at Villa Park. It is a great opportunity for him to revitalise his career, but will he realise this?

Sandro Tonali

Sandro Tonali’s talents cannot be denied. Part of a brilliant midfield trio at Newcastle United, how will he adapt to life at the always-turbulent Tottenham?

We’re not sure if he is the right man for the job at Spurs. His technical ability can’t be denied, but his work-rate and defensive qualities leave a lot to be desired.

Roberto De Zerbi is a hard taskmaster who always demands his players to show no quarter. He likely won’t get this from Tonali – at £100 million, he could prove to be a very costly misfire. Tonali himself also claimed that he did everything he could to get the ‘best deal’ for Newcastle [via Shields Gazette] – something that probably didn’t go down well with the Spurs massive.

Morgan Rogers

Like Tonali, Morgan Rogers is very clearly a talented footballer, but he has an awful lot of work to do to live up to his frankly vulgar transfer fee.

At an eye-watering £117 million, Rogers is the fourth-most expensive footballer of all time. That is an awful lot of pressure to put on a young man – it’s easy to forget that he’s just 24 years of age.

If he doesn’t light the world on fire at Stamford Bridge very soon, things could turn sour in an instant. We have no idea as to how he will perform under Xabi Alonso – however, the Spaniard has gotten strong results out of talented attacking midfielders in the past, so who knows?
