5 UNDERRATED Transfers in the PL This Summer

Daizen Maeda is a player who can go from zero to hero in an instant. At Celtic, he often divided opinion. When he was off the boil, he produced little of note – but when on form, he was absolutely unstoppable.

Clearly a talented player, if Ipswich Town can consistently get the best out of him, they’ll have a real superstar on their hands. The word ‘if’ is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that previous sentence, though.

Regardless, at just £10 million, it’s a pretty risk-free transfer. The Tractor Boys needed to add quality to their ranks – by signing Maeda, a Japanese international, they have done just that.

Christos Tzolis

Some Arsenal fans were underwhelmed when they snapped up Christos Tzolis for a fee of £34 million from Club Brugge. The fee seemed a little steep at first – then, his goal contribution record was examined.

In the Juliper Pro League, Tzolis notched up an astonishing 17 goals and 23 assists in 36 games for Brugge. Whatever you might think about the quality of that particular division, these numbers are highly impressive.

He has already looked like a classy player in pre-season for the Gunners, too. Next season, those who balked at his transfer fee may be made to look foolish very quickly.

Luka Vuskovic

Brighton needed to plug a gaping hole in their backline this summer. When star player Jan Paul van Hecke left to join Tottenham Hotspur, it quickly became a priority.

Tottenham might’ve taken Brighton’s best player, but the Seagulls got something back from them. In response, they signed one of Spurs’ best young players in Luka Vuskovic.

A Croatian international at just 19 years of age, Vuskovic is already a very talented and physically gifted player. At 6ft 4, he’s aerially dominant, whilst also possessing excellent technical ability. Van Hecke might be gone, but Vuskovic looks like the perfect replacement.

Jaidon Anthony

Jaidon Anthony was a criminally overlooked attacking player in the Premier League season. Burnley led a dismal campaign, but the 26-year-old provided a distant ray of light to the Clarets faithful.

Now, he plays for Brentford, having been snapped up for a meagre fee of just £17 million. A rapid-quick winger with brilliant movement off the ball, this is an absolute steal.

In the previous campaign, Anthony scored eight goals and racked up two assists in the Premier League. Now that he’s playing for an objectively superior team, how can he build upon this?

Antonio Silva

We were stunned when Bournemouth pulled off this transfer. Antonio Silva is amongst the most promising young defenders in the world – we believed he’d end up at a big six club.

Nevertheless, some shrewd negotation led to the Cherries landing him for a fee of £25.7 million. If he lives up to his potential, this could prove to be one of the best transfer deals of the last few years.

Technically adept, physically dominant and strong in the tackle, Silva has it all. At just 22 years of age, who knows how far he can go – and who knows how far he can take Bournemouth?
