Manchester United outcast Antony wants a return to Real Betis this summer after regaining his form at the Spanish club. Antony enjoyed a brilliant loan spell at Betis after Ruben Amorim allowed him to leave during the January transfer window.
Amorim succeeded Erik ten Hag in the middle of the last season and made many drastic changes within the team. Amorim let players like Antony and Marcus Rashford, who are not part of his plan, leave and rebuild their careers.
The former Sporting CP boss has struggled to help the squad he inherited adjust to the tactical philosophy he implemented. With United completely backing Amorim during the summer, the club needs a squad overhaul to back their current manager properly.
At the same time, United are facing financial issues with Profit and Sustainability rules hovering over their head this summer. The Red Devils have to sell their surplus before they could sign players that Amorim need in his senior squad.
According to Fichajes, Antony wants a return to Betis and build upon his successful spell and end his United tenure. However, Betis are finding it hard to afford his €40 million valuation set by United, hoping to secure another loan spell for the Brazil international.
Antony joined the Red Devils from Ajax under Ten Hag for £86 million in the summer of 2022. The 25-year-old failed to live up to the huge expectations at the club, struggling to contribute consistently to his team.
At the same time, Antony received constant criticism and was mocked incessantly on social media, hurting his confidence. The 25-year-old’s time away from United and at Betis proved fruitful as he displayed his flamboyance combined with regular contributions.
The Brazil international made 26 appearances for Betis in all competitions last season, scoring nine goals and providing five assists. Antony’s wages and United’s asking price are playing a big factor in his inability to secure a quick move.
While United cannot afford to let their surplus go on constant loan, they can also not sustain the insurmountable wages. The Red Devils face a big decision over Antony, and everything is up for speculation at this point.
