Pete O’Rourke breaks the silence on Manchester United’s chances of signing Ivan Toney

Manchester United’s search for attacking depth has gathered attention again. Joshua Zirkzee feels frustrated under Amorim because he gets limited minutes and plans to leave in January. Many clubs, including Everton, have already joined the race for the unsettled United forward. That move hints at changes in their front line.

Amid that talk, reports now link Ivan Toney with a Premier League return. Yet the idea sounds more hopeful than realistic, even as rumours continue to grow. Journalist Pete O’Rourke, speaking on the Inside Track podcast, explained Toney’s situation and possible future. He said that Al Ahli view Toney as a key player, especially after his strong start in the Saudi Pro League.

Since the English striker joined in 2024, Toney has become one of their most dependable forwards. He has helped them extend their success from last season. The Saudi club, ambitious and financially strong, plan to keep him until at least the end of the season. Toney’s contract, which runs until 2028, blocks any mid-season move.

A short-term loan in January would force all parties to negotiate heavily. O’Rourke said that Al Ahli will not allow him to leave unless Toney himself demands a move. He mentioned that the 29-year-old may push for a return only if he thinks it could improve his World Cup chances under Tuchel. Even then, O’Rourke believes a move this winter still looks unlikely.

“I think it would be a surprise if he was to return to the Premier League. He’s a very key figure for Al Ahli since he made the move to the Pro League.”

“I don’t think they would be looking to let Ivan Toney leave midway through the season.”

“They will be hoping to keep hold of him, especially if they want to have similar success that they’ve had in the last 12 months.”

“Also, he’s under contract until 2028, so any short term move, like a loan move in January, would be very complicated to do.”

“A lot of it will come down to Ivan Toney.”

“If he feels his only chance of maybe breaking into Tuchel’s plans for the World Cup is to move back to the Premier League, then that’s something that he might have to wish for or look into.”

“But I don’t think Al Ahli will be willing to let him go. As I said, I’d be very surprised if a move for Toney back to the Premier League did come to fruition.”

A Striker of strength and precision

Ivan Toney holds a reputation as one of England’s sharpest centre-forwards. He possesses physical power with technical skill, finishes calmly, especially from penalties, and reads the play inside the box with sharp instincts. Toney connects midfield and attack through clean passes. He uses his strength to protect the ball and involve others.

As a natural target man, the Al-Ahli striker creates space for teammates and adds variety to his team’s attack. Toney’s rise has shown steady progress. He began his career at Northampton Town before joining Newcastle United in 2015. After several loan spells, the 29-year-old found form at Peterborough United.

He then helped Brentford win promotion to the Premier League. Toney’s move to Al Ahli in 2024 showed his hunger for fresh challenges, but he still targets a bigger international role. However, he might not want to join Manchester United as a backup to Benjamin Sesko.

As a proven striker with clear ambition, Toney should seek regular football and accept a pay cut to make it happen. He wants to return to England to compete and prove himself again. The 29-year-old aims to remind everyone that he still scores goals with the same sharp touch.
