Manchester United have already taken an early hit in the summer transfer window, missing out on top striker target Liam Delap.
United’s intentions heading into the window were clear, with INEOS keen to bring in a new forward. Delap, following Ipswich Town’s relegation, became the leading candidate, but the 22-year-old has opted to join Chelsea instead, completing a £30 million move ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup.
While Delap’s decision forced United to pivot, the club are now accelerating their pursuit of Hugo Ekitike. Once again, though, they find themselves going head-to-head with Chelsea in the race for a new striker.
There’s no doubt Chelsea have disrupted United’s plans by landing Delap. But the Red Devils now have an opportunity to hit back by beating them to Ekitike.
Ekitike grew up supporting United, and even though the club can’t offer European football next season, INEOS will be confident in their pitch to the Eintracht Frankfurt forward. The 22-year-old netted 22 goals last season. While Frankfurt are said to be holding out for £85 million, there’s optimism that a lower fee could be agreed.
Chelsea remain interested in Ekitike, according to The Athletic, but with Delap already through the door, it’s unclear whether the Frenchman would be a guaranteed starter under Enzo Maresca.
Despite already signing Delap, Chelsea are still exploring options up front, but they’re not short on bodies. Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu are also part of Maresca’s squad, which means playing time isn’t guaranteed for any new arrival.
That’s not the case at United. After a disappointing season for Rasmus Hojlund, the door is open for a new number nine to step straight into the starting XI. Fabrizio Romano has also noted that United are lurking in the background, keeping a close watch on developments.
The big question for INEOS isn’t just the fee, though. There are concerns about Ekitike’s underlying numbers at Frankfurt. While the talent is obvious, it’s far from certain he’s ready to lead the line at Old Trafford week in, week out. It’s a major call for United’s new hierarchy, but one that could define their summer window.
