Agustin Giay targeted by Manchester United

Manchester United’s transfer business has been heavily criticized following the end of the summer transfer window.

The window, focused heavily on midfield recruitment, did not see the club sign a left-back with Luke Shaw left as the side’s only senior recognized player in that position.

Whilst Harry Amass and Noussair Mazraoui can fill in, when required, calls for the club to sign a left-back using the free agent market remain high, although the Red Devils do not look like signing anyone right now.

With last summer’s transfer window focused on recruitment in attacking positions and this summer’s transfer window focused on signing individuals in midfield positions, speculation has pointed towards a recruitment drive in defensive positions next year.

Lewis Hall emerged as one of the club’s top targets at left-back during this summer’s transfer window and reports have suggested that United may explore the possibility of signing the Newcastle United player again next year.

CCTransfers16, reporting on X, has now said that Manchester United are looking at 22-year-old right-back Agustin Giay.

Giay (playing for Palmeiras in Brazil) has played 100 times for the side since joining them in 2024 and had been with San Lorenzo prior to that, where he made 88 appearances.

The 22-year-old’s performances have also earned him call-ups to Argentina’s national team, both at youth and senior level, with him playing alongside Lionel Messi and Emi Martinez against Mauritania in March.

Whilst signing the right-back would not answer United’s questions at left-back, it could provide them with additional depth in midfield given Giay’s ability to play in the middle of the park.

It remains unclear what Manchester United’s plans are for Agustin Giay, or whether the club would actually pursue a deal for him in the coming transfer windows.

This latest report does, however, provide another indication of the work being done behind the scenes as United continue to identify players that could strengthen the squad in the future.
