English referee Michael Oliver fell short of expectations in last night’s Champions League match between Ajax and Inter Milan.
According to Corriere dello Sport via FCInterNews, the experienced official made one crucial mistake in the first half.
Inter Milan claimed a vital 2-0 win in Amsterdam as Marcus Thuram scored a match-winning brace.
However, the game could’ve gone a different way.
Indeed, Yann Sommer made a monumental save to keep the scoreline at 0-0, moments before Thuram’s opener.
Inter took the lead on the stroke of halftime. However, they could’ve done it sooner had it not been for Michael Oliver.
Despite awarding a penalty to Inter over a foul on Thuram, the Englishman changed his decision after consulting with the side-pitch monitor.
Indeed, he punished the 28-year-old for an earlier foul after reviewing the incident with VAR.
Yet, it was a highly controversial call, which could’ve backfired on Inter later in the first half.
Therefore, the Italian press blasted him after the game.
