Alejandro Garnacho Gives Transfer Update
Imagn Images

Alejandro Garnacho’s Manchester United future is hanging by a thread, and this week may have just confirmed it. As most of the squad returned to Carrington to begin preparations for the 2025–26 season, the 20-year-old winger was notably absent from the main training group. Instead, he was spotted training alone, sharing an image on social media of himself grinding it out in the gym, without a teammate in sight.

The decision was not his. Garnacho, along with Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia, have been instructed to remain away from the first-team setup while the club works through ongoing transfer negotiations. It is not just a disciplinary separation. It is a statement. Manager Rúben Amorim’s message is clear. If you are not part of the long-term vision, you’re not part of the preparations.

Fall-Out After Europa Final

This didn’t come out of nowhere. Tensions between Garnacho and Amorim first started after the Europa League final loss to Tottenham in Bilbao, a game United narrowly lost 1-0. The Argentine had expected to start. When he didn’t, he didn’t take it well. After the match, he questioned Amorim‘s team selection and indirectly shared his thoughts on his social media about how he would have made a difference.

That sort of rebellion comes with consequences for a young player who has already made 144 appearances, scored 26 goals, and assisted on 22. Especially under a manager trying to instill authority and rebuild a broken dressing room after a disastrous 15th-place finish last season, and also missing out on Europe.

From Amorim’s side, the message has been firm. He’s taking no prisoners in reshaping the squad. Anyone who doesn’t buy into the vision is being phased out. Garnacho, despite all his promise and flair, has found himself on the wrong side of that line.

Napoli Come Calling Again For Garnacho

Garnacho will not be short on options. Napoli, the reigning Serie A champions, are back in the picture after failing to land him in January. Their reported bid of around £60 million was rejected. United held out for more, but that stance might be softening.

Now, with the winger out of the leading group and the relationship with the manager collapsing, United is believed to be more willing to do business. Napoli senses their opportunity. This time, they are confident a deal could be done for around £45 million. That’s a significant drop, but United may accept it if it means drawing a line under the saga before the season starts.

Behind the scenes, talks between the two clubs are active. Garnacho has long admired the idea of playing in Italy. Napoli views him as a natural successor to Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who was transferred to PSG in January, where he won everything.  What’s working in Napoli’s favor is timing. The longer the Argentine remains sidelined, the more pressure there will be to reach a compromise.

Chelsea Keeping Tabs

Napoli may not be the only suitor. Chelsea is understood to be monitoring the situation closely and could swoop in if things stall between Napoli and United. While they haven’t tabled an official offer yet, several reports claim the London club has enquired about the Argentine’s availability and is ready to pounce if needed. Garnacho may be young, but his potential is undeniable. In a modern market where clubs pay big for young talent with flair, he remains an attractive asset, even if his current club runs out of patience.

Final Thoughts

As things stand, Garnacho remains in limbo. He’s been given access to United’s training facilities and continues to work on his fitness, but he’s not in Amorim’s active plans. The club hopes to resolve his situation, along with the other out-of-favor names, before the squad flies out for their U.S. preseason tour later this July.

So far, the Argentine has remained quiet. Other than his social media post showing him training alone, there has been no statement, interviews, or clarifications. Sometimes, silence says more than words. That one image, alone in the gym, head down, putting in the work, felt like a goodbye in slow motion. For now, the ball is in the club’s court, whether it’s Napoli, Chelsea, or another late contender. Garnacho looks increasingly likely to be playing his football elsewhere next season.
