Managers are not always in agreement with the club when their team signs a high profile transfer, and such was definitely the case between former Chelsea head man Enzo Maresca and winger and attacking midfielder Alejandro Garnacho.
Chelsea’s decision to pay 40 million pounds for Garnacho is not looked at favorbly in hindsight at all, and it honestly was not praised by most Chelsea supporters at the time either.
And clearly, Maresca was not a fan of the decision either. Maresca wanted Chelsea desperately to sign more center backs, especially when Levi Colwill went down with a torn ACL.
Well, Chelsea are still reeling and no better defensively despite multiple opportunities to sign an established star at the position between the summer and winter transfer windows.
Meanwhile, the player Chelsea signed instead, forward Alejandro Garnacho, continue to stink up the joint and legitimately looks like the worst attacking player on the team right now.
Because new additions Estevao Willian and Joao Pedro have panned out so well, Garnacho’s problems are not of huge concern, but from a resource allocation standpoint, it is obvious that Garnacho was a mistake when the Blues could have spent the same amount of money on a great center back.
Garnacho has clearly not been great, and Maresca was absolutely right that Chelsea should have signed a central defender instead of the former Manchester Unitd flop, who is now a current Chelsea flop and can barely play a half against one of the worst teams in the Premier League, West Ham United, before being hooked off by the new coach.
