Manchester United’s midfield rebuild has been one of the biggest talking points of the summer.

While new arrivals have already strengthened Michael Carrick’s options, the recruitment team continue to scour the market for another player capable of completing the club’s new-look engine room.

It has not all gone according to plan, though.

Several highly-rated midfielders have slipped away from Old Trafford in recent weeks, forcing United to rethink their shortlist as they prepare for another long season ahead.

Despite those setbacks, the club remain convinced there is value to be found before the transfer window closes.

Now, one of the Premier League’s brightest young midfielders has handed United fresh encouragement.

Alex Scott provides Manchester United transfer boost

According to Sky Sports News, Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott has rejected another contract proposal from the Cherries, with negotiations failing to produce an agreement despite months of discussions.

Talks over a new deal first began towards the end of last season, with Bournemouth making several offers in an attempt to secure Scott’s long-term future.

However, the 22-year-old has reportedly informed the club he is not prepared to commit to fresh terms, marking the second contract offer he has turned down.

Bournemouth remain determined to keep hold of the midfielder and have already rejected approaches from several clubs.

Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea are all understood to remain at the front of the queue, with the trio continuing to monitor Scott’s situation closely while the player enters the final two years of his current contract.

United’s interest comes after a summer in which several preferred midfield targets have slipped through their fingers.

Elliot Anderson opted for Manchester City, Mateus Fernandes chose Tottenham Hotspur, while Aurelien Tchouameni remains committed to Real Madrid despite United’s admiration.

The Reds are also continuing to monitor AS Roma midfielder Manu Kone, while reports have recently claimed the club are preparing an offer for Paris Saint-Germain youngster Warren Zaire-Emery.

Alex Scott has now emerged as another serious option after enjoying an outstanding season under Andoni Iraola.

The England youth international played a major role in Bournemouth qualifying for European football for the first time in the club’s 127-year history, further enhancing his reputation as one of England’s most promising midfielders.

With Alex Scott unwilling to extend his stay at the Vitality Stadium for now, Manchester United have been handed another opening as they continue searching for the final midfield addition Carrick has requested before the new season begins.
