Chelsea have been one of the most active teams again in the summer transfer window this year, bringing in big names like Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, Joao Pedro, and Liam Delap to the fold with Estevao Willian, Dario Essugo, and Andrey Santos already incoming.

The Blues aren’t done yet, though. They are still mulling over potential options at striker and even center back, such as a reunion with Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi, and they are closing in on a deal for Ajax gem Jorrel Hato in defense.

Meanwhile, Chelsea seem to be zeroing in on another playmaker profile in the attacking midfield to combine with superstar Cole Palmer, who just led the Blues to a Club World Cup triumph over reigning Champions League winners PSG.

In fact, Chelsea want to sign two players. According to a new report from Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, who is as plugged in as anyone to this particular transfer, a verbal agreement between Chelsea and RB Leipzig star midfielder Xavi Simons is “almost done”.

Chelsea could still land two attacking midfield stars

Chelsea are reportedly still working on signing the 22-year-old Dutch international, and although negotiations seemed to stall after initial optimism, Plettenberg relays that there remains a “strong feeling” that the Blues will be able to land Simons.

He further states that Chelsea need to make some sales before they can bring in Simons, as the club remains interested in signing another playmaker, Manchester United star Alejandro Garnacho, along with Simons; signing the two players is not a mutually exclusive enterprise.

Although Tottenham and Arsenal have been linked to Simons, the past two weeks have made it clear that Chelsea are the overwhelming favorites to land Simons ,and it appears the only real obstacle to getting this deal over the line is clearing out physical space for Simons with all the moves the Blues have made over the years under Todd Boehly.

Kiernan Dewsburry-Hall is the most obvious name in midfield to axe, as Enzo Maresca seemingly only brough KDH with him from Leicester City to help facilitate the transition to his complicated system, which is now obviously no longer an issue.

If Chelsea can somehow bag both Garnacho and Simons this summer as versatile players who can excel in the No. 10 roles or in other positions (Simons as an 8 and Garnacho on the wings), then they will have one of the most flexible hauls of young incoming attacking talents when you factor in the additions of winger Bynoe-Gittens and central forwards Delap and Joao Pedro.
