Altay Bayindir breaks silence on Manchester United exit

Manchester United’s goalkeeping department has undergone one of the biggest shake-ups of any position this summer.

Michael Carrick has wasted little time reshaping his options between the sticks as the club prepares for a demanding season across multiple competitions.

Senne Lammens has established himself as the club’s new number one after arriving at Old Trafford, while experienced goalkeeper Karl Darlow has also been brought in to provide reliable cover.

Meanwhile, Andre Onana has already departed on loan to Trabzonspor, leaving United with a very different goalkeeping hierarchy compared to this time last year.

With competition for places increasing, it became increasingly clear that another goalkeeper would need regular football elsewhere to continue his development.

That has now been confirmed, with Altay Bayindir completing a season-long loan move to Celta Vigo.

The Spanish outfit will cover the Turkish international’s wages in full throughout the campaign, while the agreement also includes performance-related bonuses that could increase the overall value of the deal for Manchester United.

Celta also hold an option to make the move permanent for a reported £3.5 million, although United have protected themselves by inserting a significant sell-on clause should the La Liga side eventually decide to cash in.

Altay Bayindir arrived at Old Trafford from Fenerbahce in 2023 for around £4.3 million and went on to make 17 appearances across his three seasons with the club.

The 28-year-old briefly started last season as United’s first-choice goalkeeper but endured a difficult spell after a number of costly mistakes, eventually losing his place following the arrival of Lammens.

His move to Spain continues Carrick’s rebuilding of United’s goalkeeping unit, with Bayindir following Onana through the exit door as opportunities became increasingly limited.

After the transfer was completed, Bayindir took to Instagram to deliver an emotional farewell message to Manchester United supporters.

“Thank you for every chant, every message and every moment we have shared.

“Your support means a lot to me and I’ll carry it with me throughout this next chapter of my life.

“I’ll miss Old Trafford but this is not goodbye.

Wishing a successful season to everyone at the club, my heart and support will always be with you.

With Celta Vigo now providing him with the chance for regular first-team football, Bayindir will hope to rediscover the form that originally convinced Manchester United to bring him to England, while the Reds retain the possibility of benefiting financially should the Spanish club decide to make his stay permanent.
