‘Among clubs monitoring’ – Fabrizio Romano drops surprising Barcelona CB transfer news

Barcelona have been in the market for an additional center back with many of their current top options proving to be either unreliable or overly prone to injury. More depth is needed at this critical position, and, for the most part, Barca appear to be aiming high.

Their favorite option in central defense is the player every top club in Europe has been dreaming about for years, Alessandro Bastoni of Inter Milan. The left footed Nerazzurri star has appeared in two Champions League Finals as a linchpin player in one of the best defenses of the tournament.

Bastoni is almost unreachable, though. Barcelona are maybe the only club with a legitimate chance at the Italian international, owing to their cachet, but he may be a player who stays with Inter for longer – or even for life.

So Barcelona need to look at alternative center backs, and they are being linked to a very surprising name. According to a report from Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona are “among clubs monitoring” Marcos Senesi of Bournemouth, who has been arguably the most out of nowhere breakout defender in European football this season.

Fab says that Juventus are also interested in Senesi, given their own need for a star center back to add to the rotation. Senesi can be signed by Barcelona for very cheap, too, as he is on an expiring contract.

So Barca, who love their free agent deals, can either sign him for free this winter on a pre contract deal for next summer, or they can merely sign him for a couple of million euros this winter to secure him for sure over any other interested parties like Juventus.

Senesi is in the prime of his career at the center back position as a 28 year old, and while he was a virtual unknown before this season started, he has been insanely good in 2025/26 for the Cherries as one of the most active center backs in Europe.

Now, this could all just be a purple patch for Senesi, and he really does not have the age or top line quality of a Barcelona center back. But his production and leadership are impressive, so, for the price, he is not a bad Plan C or D option for the Blaugrana.
