Is Rob McElhenney in owning a soccer team? Billy Bennight/AdMedia/Sipa USA

Actors Rob McElhenney, Ryan Reynolds interested in buying fifth-tier Wrexham AFC

The gang...buys a lower-tier football club?

On the same day that reports emerged an American sports investment company was in advanced talks to purchase Barclays Premier League outfit Burnley, Wrexham AFC of England's fifth tier in the country's football pyramid released the following about two potential bidders for that club:

"Rob McElhenney is an American actor, director, producer and screenwriter, best known as the creator of 'It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.'

"Ryan Reynolds is an award-winning Canadian actor, writer, producer and business entrepreneur whose credits include Marvel’s 'Deadpool.'

"In due course, Mr. McElhenney and Mr. Reynolds will put forward their vision for Wrexham AFC and proposal for members to vote on at a second Special General Meeting."

Both men offered humorous reactions via social media:

It's anybody's guess why either would be interested in a club even die-hard football fans living in North America probably hadn't heard of before Wednesday afternoon. As Mark Ogden of ESPN pointed out, Wrexham were relegated from the English Football League in 2008 and haven't since returned.

The coronavirus pandemic continues to endanger minnows of English football, such as Wrexham, with fans unable to attend matches. A harsh truth is that Wrexham may soon need a savior with deep pockets to save the club from financial ruin.
