Ander Herrera remains one of Manchester United’s most cherished former midfielders, having won supporters’ affection through his relentless commitment and unwavering passion for the badge.
Signed from Athletic Bilbao in 2014, the Spaniard became a vital figure under Jose Mourinho, combining tactical intelligence with an extraordinary appetite for winning possession.
His unforgettable performance against Chelsea in April 2017 perfectly captured his qualities.
Tasked with marking Eden Hazard, Herrera completely neutralised the Belgian superstar, assisted Marcus Rashford’s opener and scored himself in a magnificent 2-0 victory.
Weeks later, he delivered another commanding display as United defeated Ajax to win the Europa League.
But the club Herrera represented with such pride has continued struggling under the Glazer family’s ownership.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS investment promised a transformation, yet supporters have grown increasingly frustrated with recruitment decisions, financial pressures and constant managerial changes.
Michael Carrick’s side sit 16th in the Premier League after Sunday’s humiliating 3-0 defeat against Bournemouth, which triggered furious anti-ownership chants at Old Trafford.
Herrera, meanwhile, completed an emotional return to his boyhood club in July after leaving Boca Juniors.
Now, a major development involving the former United favourite has received official government approval.
The Spanish National Sports Council has authorised investment platform A.GAIN’s proposed takeover of Real Zaragoza, where Herrera currently plays.
According to Heraldo de Aragon, the government agency approved the transaction after receiving the application on 5 October.
The investment group, led by Guatemalan businessman Bobby Aitkenhead, plans to acquire approximately 75% of the club’s existing shares.
Following a €22 million capital increase, A.GAIN is expected to control approximately 60%, with existing investors Jorge Mas and Juan Forcen retaining around 39% combined.
A.GAIN has already overseen Zaragoza’s operations since July, appointing Guido Baroli as director general.
The takeover is not yet complete, with the final share transfer and extraordinary shareholders’ meeting still outstanding.
Herrera has no reported ownership involvement in the acquisition, but the approval represents an important development for the club he returned to help rebuild.
