Manchester United find themselves navigating fresh uncertainty both on and off the pitch.
The defeat to Leeds United may have come as a surprise, but it has not completely derailed United’s push for UEFA Champions League qualification, with the club still considered firm favourites to secure a top-three finish.
However, the pressure is mounting.
Upcoming clashes against Chelsea and Liverpool now carry huge weight, as both sides are directly competing for those same Champions League spots.
At the same time, uncertainty around the managerial position has intensified.
Michael Carrick had looked like the clear frontrunner to take the role permanently, especially after a strong run of results earlier in his tenure, but recent form, just one win in the last four matches, has slowed that momentum.
Fabrizio Romano provided insight into the current situation, suggesting that despite the setback, the club’s stance has not dramatically shifted.
“After the Leeds defeat, which was impacted by the referees, Man Utd remain feeling really positive about Carrick.”
That backing could prove crucial in the coming weeks, but alternatives are firmly in the frame.
One of the names re-emerging is Andoni Iraola, who recently confirmed he will leave Bournemouth at the end of the season after an impressive spell that included a record-breaking Premier League campaign.
Romano revealed there is currently no active negotiation between United and Andoni Iraola, but the interest from the Spaniard’s side is clear.
“If you ask me, would Andoni Iraola like to be the next Man Utd manager this summer or in the future, I’m told that he would be open to that for sure.”
While Iraola’s situation adds another layer to the story, the spotlight is increasingly shifting toward Julian Nagelsmann.
The Germany national football team boss is reportedly set to be approached by United this week, with the club viewing him as one of the standout candidates to take over long-term.
Nagelsmann’s openness to returning to club football, and specifically testing himself in the Premier League, has only strengthened his position on United’s shortlist.
Another name still under consideration is Luis Enrique, who guided Paris Saint-Germain into the Champions League semi-finals this week, further enhancing his credentials, although talks over a contract extension in Paris could complicate any potential move.
United remain in control of their Champions League destiny, but with rivals slipping and pressure building, the coming weeks could shape not only their season, but also the future direction of the club from the dugout.
