Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana is closing in on a move to Turkish club Trabzonspor ahead of the final hours of their transfer window.

The 27-year-old Cameroon international has been weighing up his options since Lammens’ arrival and looks set to accept Trabzonspor’s loan offer, which includes an option to buy.

Last season, Onana was in a similar situation when he lost his starting place at United after Bart Verbruggen was signed from Brighton. He later moved on loan to Nottingham Forest, where he quickly established himself as their number one keeper.

This time around, with Lammens expected to be the main choice between the sticks for the foreseeable future, Onana is looking for regular playing time and sees a move away as his best option.

Details of Andre Onana’s deal with Trabzonspor

The structure of the deal means that although Trabzonspor won’t be paying a direct fee for the loan, there are still financial advantages for United. The Turkish club will cover all of Onana’s wages during his stay, and there is a £9m option-to-buy clause attached to the agreement.

Ineos has been active this summer, using several loan moves to thin out Amorim’s squad and better manage the club’s finances.

Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, and Rasmus Hojlund have all gone out on loan, with their new clubs picking up most of their salaries.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Trabzonspor will cover the full cost of Andre Onana’s wages for the 2025/26 season.

Onana was earning £120,000 a week at United during the 2024/25 campaign, which adds up to £6.2m annually. The move takes that figure off United’s books entirely.

The Athletic reports that sources close to Onana believe he’ll make nearly double his previous wage while playing in Turkey.

Ineos plans to move Andre Onana permanently by 2026

A straight loan agreement with Trabzonspor means Andre Onana is expected back at Manchester United next summer. While still under contract until 2028, Ineos are likely to push for a permanent solution before then.

The hope within the club is that a strong season in Turkey, combined with a good showing at AFCON, could raise his profile enough to attract serious offers from other clubs across Europe. This summer’s £30 million asking price didn’t generate any concrete bids, largely due to his struggles at Old Trafford over the past year.

If he performs well over the next 12 months, though, interest could pick up again. Ideally for Ineos, it would give them an opportunity to recover part of the £44 million investment they made when signing him back in 2023.
