Manchester United have been trying to sell Andre Onana this summer in order to replace him with a superior goalkeeper, as the Cameroonian international’s save percentage fell under 70 in his second season at the club.
The Red Devils struggled to a 16th placed finish and lost the final of the Europa League to Tottenham, meaning they will not have any sort of European football at all next season.
So Manchester United have to get things right this summer, and while Onana is a good goalkeeper who once appeared in a Champions League Final as a top Serie A goalkeeper a few years ago for Inter Milan, his play has declined and become unreliable lately.
Fans and the club view upgrading Onana with a top-class goalkeeper on the level of the top keepers at clubs like Arsenal and Liverpool in the Premier League as a priority this summer.
Although Emiliano Martinez is squarely on the radar as a possible target for Manchester United, the Red Devils have been linked to another potential signing from Serie A – the criminally underrated Vanja Milinkovic-Savic at Torino.

And now, according to a report from top Italian transfer journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Manchester United have significant interest in Atalanta star keeper Marco Carnesecchi.
In fact, Di Marzio reports that Carnesecchi – and not Martinez or Milinkovic-Savic – is the goalkeeper target Manchester United are most interested in if they sell Onana.
Monaco, per Di Marzio, currently dream of signing Onana, making them the first major team in Europe’s top five leagues to be concretely linked to the 29-year-old shot-stopper.
Given Monaco have already signed Eric Dier and Ansu Fati and have significant interest in former Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba despite him being out of football for years, Onana could very well join the Ligue 1 giants this season.
As for Carnesecchi, the 24-year-old goalkeeper doesn’t have the same name recognition as a World Cup hero like Dibu Martinez, but he looks like a better long-term signing and would make a lot of sense for Man United, depending on how much Atalanta – one of the top sides in Serie A – ask for him.
Carnesecchi made so many stunning saves throughout the 2024/25 season in both Serie A and the Champions League, raising his profile to an international level and putting him squarely on the radar of one of the biggest clubs in the world like Manchester United.
With just one goal allowed per game and a save percentage of more than 75 percent for a second straight season, Carnesecchi is on the rise and should be regarded as one of the best young goalkeepers in Europe.
