Manchester United’s midfield rebuild has become one of the club’s biggest priorities as Michael Carrick prepares for a campaign that includes Champions League football.

Further additions remain a necessity before the transfer window closes.

Several targets have slipped through United’s grasp during the summer, forcing the recruitment team to explore alternative options.

Now, attention appears to be turning towards a player who has already proven himself in the Premier League.

Fresh developments suggest negotiations are beginning to gather momentum.

Manchester United begin talks for midfield target

Manchester United are advancing in their pursuit of Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos, with talks between the clubs now underway, as reported by the Daily Mail.

The 22-year-old has emerged as one of United’s midfield targets after Carrick identified the position as an area requiring further reinforcement.

Chelsea are understood to value the Brazilian at around £50 million, with negotiations continuing as United attempt to reach an agreement.

Andrey Santos joined the Blues from Brazilian side Vasco da Gama in 2023 and featured regularly last season, making 43 appearances in all competitions while scoring three goals.

In the Premier League, he played 27 matches and found the net once as he continued to establish himself in English football.

United’s desire to strengthen the middle of the park has only increased in recent weeks.

Casemiro’s departure left a significant gap in midfield, while Manuel Ugarte’s knee ligament injury suffered with Uruguay at the World Cup has further reduced Carrick’s options ahead of the new season.

Although United have already agreed a deal to sign fellow Brazilian Ederson from Atalanta, with the transfer expected to be completed soon, the club are not stopping there.

The Red Devils previously missed out on Elliot Anderson, who completed a £116 million move to Manchester City, while Mateus Fernandes also slipped away after joining Tottenham Hotspur in an £85 million deal.

Those setbacks have prompted United to accelerate work on alternative targets, and Santos has now moved firmly into focus.
