Tottenham’s season has been nothing short of disappointing so far. Sitting 16th in the table and already eliminated from both domestic competitions, the Europa League now stands as their best shot at ending their silverware drought.
Their recent 1-1 draw against West Ham felt like a step back, especially after what was arguably their best display of the season just days earlier against Bodø/Glimt. Speaking after the West Ham game, Ange Postecoglou told Football.London, he felt proud of the performance his side delivered.
On 9th May, Tottenham will play Bodo/Glimt in the second leg. It is a game that may well be Ange Postecoglou’s biggest game of the season. At this point, who knows if the Australian will still be in a job next season; multiple managers are being linked to the job. Again, we can see Tottenham doing a complete rebuild this summer and we can expect a few new arrivals, but also expect some current members of the squad to leave.
In his post-match press conference, Ange Postecoglou, as reported by Football. London, said that he was proud of his players. He thought that by making several changes, it impacted the fluency and rhythm of the team, especially with plenty of players not getting consistent minutes. Nonetheless, he believed that the players’ effort was outstanding and there was great discipline and great organisation throughout the match.
Postecoglou noted that while he was disappointed at the goal they conceded, he was pleased that the team nullified West Ham’s attacking threat, noting their quality up front, and he also mentioned how well Spurs still threatened going forward. Ultimately, Big Ange thought that although it wasn’t a win, the players deserved some reward for how they performed, considering the circumstances and he applauded them for how they managed the occasion.
The Australian manager speaking in the post-game presser, remains optimistic about the future
“Yeah proud of the players efforts. It’s not easy making so many changes and it’s going to affect fluency and even the rhythm of the team. But even the individual players haven’t played a lot regularly and it wasn’t just the changes, I mean I only made one sub so a lot of them played a lot more minutes than they have recently. I thought the efforts that they put in today were outstanding.”
“They were really disciplined and organised. We were disappointed with the goal we conceded but aside from that I thought we nullified their threat as well as we could and they had some decent firepower up front and I still thought we were dangerous going the other way.”
“So I’m glad the boys get some reward. It’s obviously not a win but get some reward for their efforts because I thought on a difficult day they handled themselves really well.”
As highlighted by Ange, the result isn’t disheartening considering everything Spurs have endured this season. Performances like these can serve as a stepping stone heading into the crucial final stretch. With the Premier League hopes all but gone, Tottenham must now channel their full focus into the Europa League… a competition where they still stand as one of the favourites to go all the way.
